May 27, 2018, it was exactly three years ago that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) completed their comeback to the Indian Premier League (IPL) by winning their third title. Banned from the T20 league for two years, CSK made their return in 2018. Led by MS Dhoni, the Yellow Army dominated the proceedings in the league stage and became the first team to qualify for the final.
They continued their unbeaten run over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in that season and defeated the Kane Williamson-led side on all four occasions The season also marked an end to CSK’s 7-year title drought. CSK had made it to three finals after 2011 but fell short on every occasion.
Since the family members of players were also travelling with the team, the players celebrated the title victory with their loved ones. Watson also had a slow start and only scored his first run off the 12th ball he faced. The former CSK all-rounder upped the ante after the first five overs and completed his half-century off just 33 balls. The senior batsman remained unbeaten on 117 off 57 balls as CSK chased down the target in 18.3 overs.
CSK continued their purple patch in the tournament and made it to the final of IPL 2019 as well. They came close to winning the title for the second straight time but fell short by just one run against Mumbai Indians.
